What the role will include

Carterwood’s database manager will design and develop complex data structures, data models and processes to support our data warehouse and its related systems. They will develop new features in our already established warehouse, which holds data from multiple real-time and static proprietary, commercial and open source datasets. Specifically, the database architect will work closely with our remotely located software development team and our analyst team to design, improve and document the future of our backend data storage and processing solutions.


The responsibilities of the database architect may include:

  • Maintaining our AWS-hosted PostgreSQL databases to meet the current needs of our growing technology function.
  • Advising and implementing on the future direction of our data management and data product strategies.
  • Accessing and extracting information from our externally maintained MSSQL and MySQL databases.
  • Managing the interfaces between the data warehouse, business and connected systems, e.g. our in-house updaters, CRMs and client facing systems.
  • Working with our software development team to ensure that each data feed is configured and tuned for optimal performance to all output platforms.
  • Working with cross functional teams (i.e. software, advisory, agency and analytics) to gather and understand business requirements.
  • Maintaining and enhancing existing data warehouse functionality and capabilities.
  • Monitoring and managing background processes to ensure continuity of service.
  • Sourcing complex data structures, and designing and managing their input into our database.
  • Undertaking specific projects, e.g. building dashboards and bespoke products for customers.
  • Developing the database skills of our extended team.
  • Be the primary administrator for infrastructure systems such as AWS, local servers and similar.
  • Other similar and reasonable roles.


Essential competencies

  • Knowledge of RDBMS, specifically data warehouse design/architecture.
  • Ability to perform key DBA functions on PostgreSQL and SQL Server.
  • Working knowledge of performance tuning, index maintenance and active monitoring.
  • Experience in writing high performance queries and stored procedures.
  • Experience in deploying database changes/migrations.
  • Good documentation skills – experience in developing entity-relationship and schema diagrams.
  • Exposure to Cloud infrastructure, specifically AWS (RDS).
  • Fluency in English.
  • 2+ years’ experience with degree in related subject, or 3+ years’ experience otherwise. The experience referred to must include all of the following: (1) designing database schemas; (2) performing database optimisations using PostgreSQL and/or Microsoft SQL Server; and (3) coding in a general-purpose programming language, such as Python or R.
  • Working practice of geodatabases.
  • Experience in working with programming languages (Python, R, Perl, Java, Bash, Powershell, for example) for general purpose programming, e.g. accessing APIs, automating processes, manipulating data and prediction.
  • Ability to write, present and explain complex concepts to non-technical people with a clear, transparent and open approach to communicating your ideas.
  • Knowledge/awareness of agile and SCRUM working practices.
