B Corp

Our journey: joining a global movement working to benefit people and the planet

Certified B Corps™, are companies verified as meeting standards for social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.

We began our journey in 2023, led by our Finance Director, Jane Grimsted. Over the following 12 months, we worked diligently to meet the rigorous standards required. In 2024, we were proud to achieve an outstanding score of 105.5, well above the pass mark of 80.

Since then, the standards have evolved and so have we. We continue to embrace new ways of working in order to contantly improve our social and environmental performance and meet the stringent standards needed to be a B Corp.

Resolutely passionate about doing it right

Every decision in healthcare real estate has consequences for thousands of people, whether that’s building a care home, acquiring a care business, investing in retirement living, expanding healthcare services or improving operational efficiency.

Our purpose

Our purpose is to contribute to a stronger, more sustainable health and social care sector by helping operators, developers, investors and advisers make better-informed decisions, bringing communities the facilities they need and supporting local economic growth.

Carterwood’s theory of impact

Better data > Better decisions > Better capital allocation > Better care and housing provision > Better outcomes for people and communities

Our responsibility

Carterwood takes social and environmental responsibility seriously. Our purpose is to contribute to a stronger, more sustainable health and social care sector by helping operators, developers, investors and advisers make better-informed decisions, bringing communities the facilities they need and supporting local economic growth.

What’s more we do it together as a team. Being inclusive and making sure every employee is heard is built into every process, team meeting, new project, and in the ways we communicate every day.

Every B Corp must update their Articles of Association to include mission-aligned legal language. We did this in 2023 and have been living it through our value to do it right ever since.

Carterwood’s four pillars

We approach the seven impact topics in the new B Lab standards by focusing on all our stakeholders and living our value to do things right.

Clients

Clients

Whether we’re maintaining positive relationships, delivering the very best products and services, or working to the very highest standards of data security, our customers are at the heart of all our decisions.

Team

Team

We’re only as strong as our people. That’s why we go above and beyond to provide a happy and rewarding workplace. From the benefits we offer, to making sure every voice is heard, we look after our employees and put inclusivity at our core.

Community

Community

By helping investors, developers, operators, and advisers make better-informed decisions, we contribute to stronger communities. By focusing on profit, we grow and create more local jobs. We increase our impact by supporting charities and initiatives, such as Championing Social Care, The Hallmark Foundation and the wider B Corp community.

Environment

Environment

As a B Corp accredited business (and one who loves data) we review the carbon footprint of our operations annually. We’re pleased to say our footprint has been steadily reducing by 10% on average every year since we were accredited.

B Corp LogoOur impact reports

Every B Corp is required to produce a report sharing their impact each year, showcasing what’s gone well as well as any bumps in the road. It’s an opportunity to evaluate how far we’ve come and where we can best make progress next.

Net Zero

Our roadmap to carbon reduction

At Carterwood, we never stand still. We support the global ambition to limit warming to 1.5°C and we’re proactively taking steps to contribute to a sustainable future.

Our latest footprint calculation shows that since we started the process four years ago, we’ve:

  • Adapted the way we record data in Xero to make the calculation easier
  • Collated information on travel and homeworking patterns from our team
  • A number of the team have completed carbon literacy training
  • Introduced an emissions survey to capture data from suppliers on renewal of contracts
  • Launched an EV scheme for the team
  • Committed to more intentional choices for team socials – using local food suppliers and minimising travel impact
  • Weighed up the environmental impact of our Spain launch and related travel against the financial benefits of European expansion

We’re committed to, and working towards, the following actions:

  • Reduce business travel emissions
  • Improve procurement decisions
  • Increase supplier engagement
  • Improve data collection
  • Develop Scope 3 understanding

Governance and Accountability

Impact embedded into decision-making

From governance, to human rights, equity and inclusion to managing our stakeholders respectfully, we work towards the highest standards of governance and accountability.

Here we’ve outlined the commitments we make to achieve this.

Human rights

Human rights

We’re committed to respecting international human rights throughout our operations, supply chain, client relationships, and wider stakeholder community.

Our approach is informed by the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, Universal Declaration of Human Rights, International Labour Organization Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work.

Equity, diversity and inclusion

Equity, diversity and inclusion

We’re committed to creating an inclusive environment where people are treated fairly, respected, and able to contribute fully across all areas of our business operations and our stakeholder partnerships.

Responsible marketing and communications

Responsible marketing and communications

We ensure our marketing and communications practices are responsible, in line with GDPR, and respectful of the people receiving them.

Where environmental or social claims are made, we seek to ensure they are measurable, evidence-based and proportionate. No greenwashing!

Responsible Advocacy

Responsible Advocacy

We don’t engage in lobbying but contribute data to support policymakers, industry bodies, or sector campaigns to support positive outcomes for society and the health and social care sector.

Be brave, do it right and never stand still

Choosing partners who share our values

As part of our ongoing commitment to the B Corp standards, we’re actively looking at who we work with and our suppliers and choosing to work with those who share our values.

Share feedback

We're ready to listen

We always try to do our best for all of our stakeholders, whether you’re a client, a team mate, a supplier, one of our partners, or someone in our local community. We welcome feedback and concerns with an open heart.
