What it’s like to work at Carterwood?

Whether you’re fresh out of university or have several years’ experience, making the decision to apply for a job is a big one. To help you understand what it’s like to work at Carterwood, we regularly ask an employee to share their unique story.

Today, we’re sharing our interview with director, Tom Hartley.

How long have you worked at Carterwood?

I started working at Carterwood in 2010, so am probably the longest serving employee!

What do you do at Carterwood?

I’ve been a director at Carterwood since January 2019 and am part of the senior management team responsible for delivering growth across our advisory and agency divisions, and more recently Carterwood Analytics as well. Over the years, I have worked as part of our advisory team preparing detailed due diligence and strategy reports and also acting on behalf of sellers in the sale of healthcare-related land and property.

What’s changed over the years?

The level of change is staggering when I think back to working in our tiny four-person office. I remember when having two reports issued in the same week was considered busy, now we comfortably issue over 30 every month and work on some of the major transactions taking place in social care. The team has grown to over 25 people, and 2019 saw our entry into the world of technology, with the launch of Carterwood Analytics, our online platform for care home market analysis.

How would you describe the office environment?

Fast, focused and friendly.

And what’s the team like to work with?

We have a very talented team who work to tight deadlines and high standards, which is reflected in our company values and appeals to our clients! My team is target-focused and we work really well together with a complementary skill mix, everybody is always willing to help one another. We have a really inclusive and supportive atmosphere across the company and do everything with a sense of humour.

What’s been your most valuable lesson so far?

There are two valuable lessons I have learnt over the last decade, both of which are simple and I try to consider for every decision I make.
• In an advisory business, you can’t go far wrong if you put your clients at the centre of everything you do.
• If your team love what they do, your collective output will be much greater – and vice versa!

What do you love about what you do?

I love working in an ambitious business seeking significant growth and looking to revolutionise everything we do!

What’s the social life at Carterwood like?

The management team put wellness high on the agenda. While everybody works hard across the business, we have a Social and Wellness committee who devise new and innovative ways to support the whole team to be healthy and happy in the workplace and to improve our working environment.

What tip would you give to anyone looking to apply for a job at Carterwood?

Do your homework, we do have high standards and expect all our candidates to be well prepared. However, we take the interview process as a two-way conversation and like to answer lots of questions from candidates too!
